Detail of Grant's tomb
I find the quote which adorns the exterior of Grant’s tomb refreshing. “Let us have peace” are the words which closed the President’s memoirs. For a man who served his country in war, his final wish strikes me as beautiful and timely.
My original post about the General Grant National Monument is here.

About Loren Rhoads
For 10 years, I edited the nonfiction magazine Morbid Curiosity. Scribner published some of my favorite essays from the magazine as Morbid Curiosity Cures the Blues. Soon I'll have a book of cemetery travel essays called Wish You Were Here coming out. In addition to CemeteryTravel.com, I blog about writing at the Red Room.
I just discovered your blog and am quite pleased with what I have seen and read thus far. Good show!
I hope you’ll visit our website (bellamorte.net) to enjoy the fruits of our labour in exploring beautiful cemeteries and documenting them in words and photos.
Thanks so much for saying hello! You have a lovely site. You’ve inspired me to add a few more cemeteries to my “must-see” list.
Well, you’ve certainly visited a number of places that count as “Holy Grails” for us. Thanks for whetting our appetites in that regard and for your compliments on our site.
