Cemetery Travel’s readers chime in.

What graveyards did you visit on vacation this summer?

Win a copy!

Travel took me to Manhattan, Ontario, and Michigan this summer.  I visited the African Burial Ground, a Colonial-era churchyard, my first Canadian cemetery, and a cemetery with one of the largest collections of private mausoleums in the United States, which happens to lie not far from 8 Mile Road in Detroit.

Those that I haven’t written about yet will be the subjects of upcoming Cemeteries of the Week, of course.

So tell me: What cemeteries were you lucky enough to visit this summer?  What was the most beautiful thing you saw?  Would you encourage other travelers to go out of their way?

Leave your response in the comments below before September 1, 2012 — and you could win a copy of the Cemetery Travels Notebook.  Illustrated with photos from this blog to inspire your own cemetery explorations, the perfect-bound notebook has plenty of room for your own notes and ruminations.

You can see a sample of the Cemetery Travels Notebook here.

ETA:  I’ve contacted the winners for this giveaway, but tune in next month for another.  I’m going to want to hear scary (true!) cemetery stories.  In the meantime, you can order a copy of your own here: Cemetery Travels Notebook by Loren Rhoads.

What’s the grave of the most famous person in the world?

That was the question that found my Cemetery Travel blog via a Google search. It’s not a question I’ve answered yet, so I turn to the vast hivemind of the internet for the answer.

Leave your vote for the most famous person’s grave in the comments below before May 6, 2012 — and you could win a copy of the Cemetery Travels Notebook.  Illustrated with photos from this blog to inspire your own cemetery explorations, the perfect-bound notebook has plenty of room for your own notes and ruminations.

You can see a sample of the Cemetery Travels Notebook here.

So tell me: what is the most famous person’s grave in the world?

ETA: The contest is closed.  The books came today and I contact the winners shortly.

Please feel free to continue to suggest the most famous person’s grave, though.  I am loving the responses.

What’s the prettiest cemetery in springtime?

Mount Auburn in the spring

Several years ago, I took a graveyard tour in the springtime, driving from Boston to Philadelphia and back to New York City.  I saw 17 cemeteries in 10 days, each lovelier than the last.  So my question to you is:  where is the best place to revel in spring?

I’m limited by the poll-making program to 10 responses, so I merely listed the first 10 beautiful graveyards that came to mind.  I know I’ve missed many, many more.  Please point up the omissions in the comments.

Also, you can feel free to vote for more than one in the following list.

Finally, this poll doesn’t record your identity, so no worries there.  I’m just curious to see what springtime cemeteries I should add to my must-see list.

Buying a cemetery book for the holiday?

Cemetery books for beginners

Let’s say that someone needs to buy a gift for a friend or family member, in order to share or inspire a love of cemeteries. I’ve compiled a list of books that every cemetery devotee should have in his or her library. What’s your favorite? What’s the best place to start someone new?

I’ve reviewed all of these books here on Cemetery Travel in the last year. You can find individual reviews by searching for the specific book title in that little box on the upper right. You can see all my cemetery book reviews by clicking “book review” under the Categories list on the right-hand column.

I’ve included a mixture of brand-new books with old classics.  There should be something for every price range.  If you would like more recommendations, let me know.  I had a hard time limiting myself to 10 books.

If there are books that should be included on this poll that I’ve missed, please feel free to add them!

As always, there is no way to link your preference below back to you. You may vote in complete anonymity.

What’s the Spookiest Cemetery?

It’s hard for me to think about cemeteries as scary.  I haven’t ever had any truly frightening things happen to me in a graveyard (yet), but I certainly have gotten good and spooked a couple of times.

I’ve created a list of cemeteries connected to traditionally scary things — ghosts, vampires, mummies, voodoo — and some which encompass more modern fears:  natural disaster, plague, claustrophobia. Let me know what’s scariest for you.  And if you’d like links, let me know that, too.

Feel free to add anywhere I’ve missed — or tell your own TRUE spooky story — in the comments.
